MainStreet de Las Vegas

MainStreet is a national organization housed under the National Historic Trust in Washington, D.C. It was formed in the 1970s as an answer to the deterioration of America’s downtown due to competition from strip malls and big box stores. Its mission was and is to restore and revitalize the heart of the community.

New Mexico MainStreet is funded by the State of New Mexico and staffed with experts in the four principles that define MainStreet:

Design: Improving the physical appearance of the MainStreet Corridor to encourage good design practices, building maintenance, signage and banners.  Implementing a downtown streetscape design to improve streets, sidewalks, infrastructure, traffic flow, landscaping , parks and lighting.  By working in partnership with the City, these elements can preserve and enhance the appearance, architectural character, quality and use of downtown for generations to come.

Economic Positioning: Strengthening and improving the downtown economy by understanding local economic forces and assets as well as existing and potential markets. Converting unused spaces – vacant buildings and vacant upstairs spaces – into productive retail and upstairs living spaces, as well as assisting business owners to compete and succeed in today’s market.

Promotion: Marketing our unique characteristics, creating an effective promotion strategy through advertising, special events, and print media to attract people to shop at local businesses and restaurants in the historic core of downtown.  Downtown events and business promotions improve the overall downtown image and create a lively inviting atmosphere.

Organization: Establishing and maintaining a non-profit corporation that works in partnership with the public and private sector to plan and implement a comprehensive downtown revitalization strategy.  Communicating the work of the organization and progress being made downtown and ensuring that MSLV has the resources it needs to realize the community’s dream for downtown.
